What are some possible reasons why my turn signal clicker won't work?

I have a 2004 Chevy Colorado Truck and my turn signal clicker went out on me. The actual turn signal works but NOT the clicker. I would like to know what are some possible reasons why the turn signal clicker doesn't work? Is it a switch or some kind of relay? Also, what could the possible cost be to have it repaired?
