What method did you use to teach 'heel'?

For our rescue Rottweiler mix, what I did was if he started pulling I would turn around and go the other way. Every he pulled I would turn and go in the opposite direction and say "heel". He pretty soon learned that if he wanted to go one way then he couldn't pull or he would have to go the other way, and he would stick by me when I told him to heel.
