Need help with my ipod nano!!!!?

i have a ipod nano 8 gb and it wont work. i put it on the ihome it turns on but the clicker wont work i try to scroll around nut nothing? my Friends dad said it was dirty where you connect the plug in? what can i do??? i got at a store but that store is no longer there.
