How do you train your dog to come to a clicker?

My dog runs out the door and runs across the street and we have to run after him to try to get him home. So i was thinking about getting him to come to a clicker. He comes to his name most of the time when he is in the house but calling him when he is running doesn't work at all. PLEASE HELP
