What's wrong with my dog's ears?

I have three dogs, 2 yorkies and a maltese, ages 8 and 7. Recently, I noticed that one of my yorkies has black crust on his ears and is losing fur there. I can also pick off the loose crusty pieces and it takes the fur off with it. He doesn't scratch his ears much, so it doesn't seem to bother him. What is it?
