Whoa you've been misinformed! Clicker training is the complete OPPOSITE of cruel training methods. The way it works is the dog always gets a click and a treat together. But the clicker and treats are faded out over time as the puppy becomes more and more trained. Then, the clicker is not used only food and praise. The clicker is just a way of cementing in the dogs mind exactly what it did that got it the treat. It is a wonderful, effective, and kind method. It's used to train elephants, dolphins, horses, chickens etc... Clicker training is an all positive reward based method, no cruelty attached. If you are concerned about being mean to your dog then never, ever take him to training that uses shock collars, pinch collars, or harsh corrective methods. Good luck!
